On Monday, June 12, Texas Advocacy Project officially kicks off its 7th Annual Backpacks for Hope Campaign. The campaign will run from June 12 –July 29 during which time The Project will collect NEW backpacks and school supplies to distribute along with free legal line and safety planning literature to mothers and their children in domestic violence shelters across Texas.
Texas Advocacy Project is asking the community to donate new backpacks and school supplies at area drop-off locations for our Backpacks for Hope Campaign. The goal of the campaign is to make things a little bit easier for children terrorized by violence in their home, and to provide their mothers with information about The Project’s legal services that can help get – and keep – a family safe. Backpacks donated will be sent to the over 2,000 children that will be living in shelters at the beginning of the school year.
As The Project collects new backpacks, we will discreetly tuck our legal line number and other information about life-saving programs in them. Each backpack will also contain the supplies kids in crisis need to start their first days at a new school. The backpacks will go to shelters where many of the children and their moms have been forced to flee violence in their homes with little more than the clothing on their backs.
“Starting a new school is hard enough for any child—imagine what it would be like if you had to do it while showing up with your books in a paper sack...With the help of our community we will make things a little easier for kiddos, and at the same time provide their moms with the information they need to break the cycle of violence.” - Michael Walker of Allstate Insurance, and member of The Project’s Board of Directors.
