General Description: The Paralegal is responsible for assisting the staff attorneys on all assisted pro se or direct representation cases. The primary responsibilities consist of drafting pleadings, file maintenance, and client correspondence.
Duties and Responsibilities -
- Drafting and file maintenance: The Paralegal will research law, investigate facts, and prepare documents to assist attorneys. They will review documents, draft motions and other simple pleadings. The paralegal will aid staff attorneys with discovery and trial preparation. They will perform cite checks and legal research both manually and through use of electronic resources such as Lexis and Westlaw. The Paralegal will prepare correspondence, subpoenas, and other documents. They will perform court filings, records research, and deliveries. When needed, they will accompany attorneys to court to assist with litigation and will perform other duties as assigned.
- Record Keeping: The Paralegal will ensure that both the electronic and physical files are complete and accurate for use by staff attorneys.
- Administrative Functions: The Paralegal will assist the Legal Director with oversight of legal volunteers and volunteer attorneys. The Paralegal will help maintain and update the staff resource binder and assist with other administrative duties as needed.
Qualifications: Proficient in Spanish. Paralegal certification required. Skilled in client intake and interviewing. Knowledge of general legal terminology and legal principles. Ability to perform legal research, draft pleadings, and discovery. Ability to organize and prioritize workload. Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions. Must have basic computer skills and familiarity with database management and record keeping. Must be able to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to provide information to clients in crisis and be able to help focus individuals in a compassionate and respectful manner.
